Mystery surrounds 'plague death' victim Before Malcolm Casadaban died on September 13, the 60-year-old microbiologist at the University of Chicago had been suffering from flu-like symptoms. Another victim of swine flu? Perhaps - but an autopsy revealed he had plague bacteria in his blood. Casadaban was reported to have been working with a weakened vaccine strain of Yersinia pestis, intended for the development of vaccines against plague. However, doctors are not sure the bacilli in Casadaban's blood were the cause of death, or how they got there. So what's going on?

Republicans: Dems ignore health care concerns The Democratic-run Congress is ignoring the public's concerns in the rush to pass legislation to overhaul the nation's health care system, Republicans say."The American people expect us to get this right and to do it in an open, honest and bipartisan debate. That's what they deserve," said Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson, in his party's radio and Internet address Saturday. "But that's not what they're getting from the Democrats on Capitol Hill."

Analysis: Strains show in debate on Afghan troops The Potomac River is a physical as well as a figurative divide between the White House and the Pentagon, and occupants of each building often refer to the other address as a slightly foreign place "across the river."The gulf is suddenly on display as President Barack Obama contemplates whether to widen the U.S. commitment to the 8-year-old war in Afghanistan, a battle that is losing political and popular support even as it replaces Iraq as the military's No. 1 priority.

Thoughts 10/21/2008 I have been reading quite a bit lately on mind-coercion and brainwash.  There are some very interesting articles on the net about this.  One fact that stuck out in my mind, is that almost everyone, when being influenced, makes decisions on emotions instead of logic.  That makes perfect sense if you think about it.  How else could dictators or cult-leaders convince the masses of their ideology being true?  It’s all about charisma; and if you think about it, that’s a pretty scary thought.

Judge Napolitano on Forced Vaccinations in Massachusetts J udge Andrew Napolitano comments on the completely unconstitutional bill in Massachusetts that will allow the governor to declare an emergency and “allow” police to force their way into your homes to vaccinate you. As Gerald Celente has said, has the Second American Revolution begun?

Is decapitating your wife ‘malicious’? "Words mean things," Rush Limbaugh likes to say. A Rough Week for Glenn Beck Love him or loathe him, Glenn Beck is undeniably buzzy. This past week, the conservative commentator was mocked like a nerd in junior-high gym class. UPDATE 3-US FDA sees pancreatitis link with Merck's Januvia WASHINGTON, Sept 25 (Reuters) - U.S. health officials said on Friday they suspect Merck & Co Inc's (MRK.N: Quote, Profile, Research) blockbuster diabetes drug Januvia may be linked to serious cases of inflamed pancreas, but company officials disputed the connection. The Food and Drug Administration said that 88 cases of acute pancreatitis had been reported since the drug's approval in 2006 through February 2009.Because a number of patients developed the condition soon after taking Januvia, or related drug Janumet, and more than half saw it disappear after they stopped using it, "FDA believes there may be an association" with the drug.

"Rosetta Stone" of supervolcanoes discovered in Italian Alps Scientists have found the "Rosetta Stone" of supervolcanoes, those giant pockmarks in the Earth's surface produced by rare and massive explosive eruptions that rank among nature's most violent events. The eruptions produce devastation on a regional scale — and possibly trigger climatic and environmental effects at a global scale.A fossil supervolcano has been discovered in the Italian Alps' Sesia Valley by a team led by James E. Quick, a geology professor at Southern Methodist University. The discovery will advance scientific understanding of active supervolcanoes, like Yellowstone, which is the second-largest supervolcano in the world and which last erupted 630,000 years ago.

Located in California's Central Valley, between the state's capital city and Stockton, it is where the American, Mokelumne, Cosumnes, and Calaveras Rivers flow into the larger Sacramento and San Joaquin. It is also where the saddest agricultural saga since the Depression-era Dust Bowl is now playing, as the waters from those rivers flow beneath San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and out to sea. As they flow unimpeded to the Pacific, those waters are also washing out to sea the livelihoods of tens of thousands of farm workers and agricultural business owners. It is an economic as well as human tragedy.

Conservative Patriots v. Government Trough Feeders / 9~12 Rally Coverage UPDATED W/ CORRECTION

The Oil Shortage Hoax There was a staggeringly important article on the front page of the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. Briefly, it said that the immense run up in oil prices in 2008, from roughly $33 a barrel to roughly $150 per barrel was not caused by an oil shortage, was not caused by an immense upsurge in demand from China and India and Brazil, not caused by bandits in Nigeria. This finding was from President Obama's Commodity Futures Trading Commission, hardly a mouthpiece of Big Oil.

The Elders' next move RAMALLAH, West Bank -- At long last, a spotlight is shining on Palestinian nonviolent efforts to throw off the Israeli occupation. A visit by a group of high profile "Elders" last month to the Palestinian village of Bil'in in the West Bank, and the barrier running through it, bathed our landscape in a moral clarity that is too rarely seen by the outside world. Each of the Elders is a powerful moral authority and includes figures like former President Jimmy Carter, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former President Mary Robinson of Ireland.

50 million new patients? More primary docs a must Among the many hurdles facing President Barack Obama's plan to revamp the nation's health care system is a shortage of primary care physicians — those legions of overworked doctors who provide the front line of medical care for both the sick and those hoping to stay healthy. As Massachusetts' experience shows, extending health care to 50 million uninsured Americans will only further stress the system and could force many of those newly insured back into costly emergency rooms for routine care if they can't find a primary care doctor, health care observers said.

Staggering Job Losses if Government Health Care Bill is Passed!

Celebrating the 9/12 rallies-TURNOUT EST RANGE FROM 350K (liberal) TO 2 MILLION (conservative) It’s been an unprecedented year for limited government activism. It would never have been possible without the early initiative of grass-roots leaders in the #tcot community on Twitter, Smart Girl Politics #DontGo — and concerned moms like Keli Carender and Amanda Grosserode who stood up in their communities against reckless spending in Washington before anyone was listening. Before the cable news was paying attention. Before it became fashionable for politicians to latch on. Activists were derided as amateurs who couldn’t turn out a crowd. Then they were smeared as corporate shills. They were criticized for not having a coherent message. Then they were mocked for ideological single-mindedness. They are resented by professional strategists who accuse them of organizing empty protests that won’t translate into electoral gains. But the movement has given birth to a new generation of movers and shakers who have rejected establishment partisan politics for nimble, Internet-facilitated, issues-based advocacy. pictures

The Empty Suit And The Beauty Queen Many in the Right have taken note of Barack Hussein Obama's repeated shafts at Rightist commentators who've accurately characterized his attempt to nationalize American medical care. We're "liars," "fabricators," and "divisive voices." We're adamantly opposed to "reform." We must have evil motives, for why else would anyone stand athwart something so compassionate as health insurance for all?

FOLKS: YOU HAVE DONE IT...You have made a difference, smoked out the commissioner, grassroots is making a difference!!

Now, you have to go further so they reverse this ruling for the health of our children and for us!

Jim Turner, a great public interest lawyer in Washington DC, has filed a petition for reconsideration on behalf of Citizens for Health and other organizations and individuals.

This petition gives Deputy Commissioner Sharfstein another chance -- a chance to choose between children and Henry Schein Inc.; a chance to choose between his boss and the President who appointed him.

I urge you to call or write FDA Deputy Commissioner Joshua Sharfstein and ask him to reconsider this rule. Ask him to return to being a child advocate, which he was before he came to FDA.

So please call Commissioner Sharfstein, at 301.796-5040, or write him at JMSharf1@fda.hhs.gov

You can also add even more pressure by calling your Congressman; your federal legislative representative.

If you don’t know who your Congressman or Congresswoman is, you can find out by going to www.congress.org. You can also call Capitol Hill and ask who your Congressman is, at 202.224-43121, or 202.225-3121.

It's important to make it clear that people at the grassroots are not going to accept the FDA's ruling, which protects the profits of the seller of amalgam instead of protecting our children from a know neurotoxin.

Outburst and ovations There was a lot riding on President Obama's primetime speech on health care reform. Billed as a "make or break" moment, his address before Congress was designed to bring clarity and calm nerves. Sources say he was editing until the final hours, right around when new polls showed a jump in disapproval ratings on his handling of the issue. The stage was set for a pivotal moment in the contentious debate.Standing ovations abounded during Obama's speech, but blogs are buzzing most about N.C. Republican Rep.-turned-heckler Joe Wilson who loudly yelled "You lie!" after the president said health care reform wouldn't cover illegal immigrants. The moment threw Obama off track, if briefly. Michelle Obama was reported to have shaken her head in dismay from her seat.

Did anyone run the numbers???

A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline.

A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year per vehicle.

They claim 700,000 vehicles – so that's 224 million gallons year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.

5 million barrels of oil is about 1/4 of one day's US consumption.

And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75/bbl.

So, we all contributed to spending $3 billion* to save $350 million.

How good a deal was that ???

They'll probably do a great job with health care though!!
