Although it may seem that one person's opinion on what should be scientificallv investigated will not be taken seriously, nevertheless if that one person is vocal (and persistent) enough with that opinion or if enough people come together "voicing" the same opinion, the "system" must and does respond.
The tensions and pressures of groups and/or individuals
may be reacted much "hoopla" and fanfare. This often may be only public relations giving the appearance of championing a certain goal, i.e. advertising campaign selling an image of caring doctors in research school of medicine, etc.
On the other hand, there may be little promotion
where, behind the scenes, the medical establishment might be "translating" and/or concentrating the single individuals "voice" (seemingly silent and powerless) into the energy of its own cause. in other words the scientific community may often "adopt" the cause of a single individual because even a solitary "whisper" of an opinion can leave meaning in the heart of someone in the scientific community.
The individuals' legitimacy of purpose (both within
and without the scientific community) may not be intensely shared
and campaigned for as a need to be addressed, but it is often
finally revealed that the established medical authorities altered
their prior objectives to include the lone "voices" needs. '
Again the input from a single individual may seem
to be distanced from the process of scientific breakthrough,
but many young, old, sick or well individuals can in reality
be the CAUSE by which a breakthrough occurs, ie sickle cell
anemia.
Though an individual or a small group may APPEAR to not
influence,determination of the course of events of what gets studied,
what gets funded etc., the real effect is often the scientific
community SILENTLY champions the cause of the individual While
giving the appearance of not responding.
The tensions and pressures are greatest in the
scientificommunitywhenresponsetoasleepinggiantis required visualized as pure, energy of public opinion. See
it as an "eye"thugh a hole in the ground. (At this point I draw
a line toreprsent the ground and then an eye under the line directing the gaze
upwardsI label the eye public opinion.) When public opinion has "broken
through"
ground level it may very well have already become "corrupted" by unrealistic
appearances of legitimacy, because by now the voiced pressures and tensions may
no longer be authentic.
Although the individual or the group who is represented
by the "eye" may never
be acknowledged as having an important or any,
for that matter, part in causing cure for a disease to be found,
or a technological innovation, they still mav have "started the ball rolling" and this is a real achievement.
So if the individual or small groups legitimate "voice" is the unseen cause that empowered the accomplishment, then like a snowball gathering momentum, all it ' takes is the "purity of heart" in the snowball to attract more "mass" and though the slush and sludge, the snowball accumulates may slow it down, we all know that an ice ball can be dangerous and so does the scientific community Rather than wait for the ice ball to melt, something
may be done toaccommodate public opinion.
