Ever since the AIDS epidemic became official in June 1981, there have been rumors that AIDS is a man-made disease. Originally introduced in the late 1980s, many NRTIs have since been replaced in developed countries by newer, and much more expensive, antiretroviral drug cocktails that may be just as damaging. Some conservatives run with the story, which reinforces their preconceptions about foreign aid and fits the need for budget cuts. After all, in this view, two-thirds of Global Fund money is thrown down a rathole of corruption.

It may come as a big surprise to most people, but HIV tests given to people today don't actually test for the presence of the HIV virus. Rather, they test for the presence of HIV antibodies that the immune system creates to defend itself against HIV. And just because you have HIV antibodies doesn't mean you actually carry HIV. Before the AIDS epidemic became official in 1981, I had been studying cancer and had found bacteria (not viruses) in certain cancers. In particular, as a dermatologist I had studied "classic" cases of Kaposi's sarcoma in older non-gay men.
This work and subsequent KS research was published in 1981 in scientific journals --- but it was totally ignored when the AIDS epidemic hit and when KS became widely known with the infamous (in my opinion) term "gay cancer."
