We seem to be heading into another nasty winter this year, although surely not on a par with last year’s over kill. We can not be that unlucky. Yet cold winters do come in cycles if that is what we should call them. While the continental USA is catching it, it usually turns out somewhere else is getting away with a very mild winter. The average may barely change in terms of the Globe, but a significant cycle exists within that average that gives us what we actually get.
I also added the usual notes here on the sunspot crowd. That is still lagging and it supports a continuing coldness in Europe and elsewhere.
I would prepare for another round of cold weather this winter. It certainly feels like an early one on the West Coast which often dodges the worst of it.

A rare scene of drifting snow in July appeared on the Zheduo Mountain, Kangding County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, while people in many other places were suffering from hot summer.
Snow and drizzling fog covered the Zheduo Mountain section along State Highway 318 around 07:00 on Wednesday. The snow was over 30 centimeters deep. This sudden snow fall caused trouble to passing vehicles. However, some people enjoyed the scene. They walked out of their car and took pictures.
“I came from Nanjing City of Jiangsu Province. I've come to Sichuan for a tour. I never saw snow in July. It is indeed rare. Even in winter, I rarely saw snow in Nanjing,” said a woman.

Wichita, Kan., residents are still reeling from a bizarre weather system that spiked temperatures 20 degrees in a matter of minutes in the early hours of Thursday morning.
KSN Channel 3's meteorologist JD Rudd explained the causes of the rare nighttime temperature spike, known as a "heat burst." First, winds gusted up to 69 miles per hour at around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, when temperatures were still in the 80s. At 12:22 a.m., temperatures were at 85 degrees in the region. Less than 20 minutes later, the temperature spiked to 102 degrees, and winds continued to gust at about 50 miles per hour.
By 3:00 a.m., the temperatures had again fallen and the winds stopped.
